Описание
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
ref_tracker: implement use-after-free detection
Whenever ref_tracker_dir_init() is called, mark the struct ref_tracker_dir
as dead.
Test the dead status from ref_tracker_alloc() and ref_tracker_free()
This should detect buggy dev_put()/dev_hold() happening too late
in netdevice dismantle process.
A vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel's ref_tracker subsystem, which can lead to a use-after-free condition due to improper handling of reference tracking during network device teardown. Specifically, when ref_tracker_dir_init() is invoked, it marks the associated ref_tracker_dir structure as dead. However, if functions such as dev_put() or dev_hold() are called after this point, particularly during the dismantling of network devices, they may operate on already freed memory, which can lead to memory corruption and system instability.
Отчет
While the NVD has assigned this vulnerability a High severity rating with a CVSS score of 7.8, this assessment represents a theoretical worst-case scenario. It presumes potential chaining of exploitation that could impact confidentiality or integrity. However, in the absence of a confirmed proof-of-concept, evidence of attacker control, or any demonstrated real-world exploitation, this rating likely overstates the immediate and practical risk to our environment.
