CVE-2024-42090

Описание

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pinctrl: fix deadlock in create_pinctrl() when handling -EPROBE_DEFER In create_pinctrl(), pinctrl_maps_mutex is acquired before calling add_setting(). If add_setting() returns -EPROBE_DEFER, create_pinctrl() calls pinctrl_free(). However, pinctrl_free() attempts to acquire pinctrl_maps_mutex, which is already held by create_pinctrl(), leading to a potential deadlock. This patch resolves the issue by releasing pinctrl_maps_mutex before calling pinctrl_free(), preventing the deadlock. This bug was discovered and resolved using Coverity Static Analysis Security Testing (SAST) by Synopsys, Inc.

A deadlock flaw was found in the Linux kernel’s pinctrl subsystem. This flaw allows a local user to crash the system.

Отчет

No known reproducer for this issue. It can happen due to some complex preconditions and in-error path handling. Within regulated environments, a combination of the following controls acts as a significant barrier to successfully exploiting a CWE-833: Deadlock vulnerability and therefore downgrades the severity of this particular CVE from Moderate to Low. The platform's orchestration capabilities, including automated pod restarts, liveness/readiness probes, and health checks, help to identify and remediate stuck or non-responsive processes caused by deadlocks. Event logs are collected and processed for centralization, correlation, analysis, monitoring, reporting, alerting, and retention, which helps detect and alert of any deadlocking conditions. Additionally, process isolation ensures that compromised components are contained within the originating process, preventing them from affecting other processes or the system as a whole.

Меры по смягчению последствий

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
