Описание
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
libceph: Prevent potential null-ptr-deref in ceph_handle_auth_reply()
If a message of type CEPH_MSG_AUTH_REPLY contains a zero value for both
protocol and result, this is currently not treated as an error. In case
of ac->negotiating == true and ac->protocol > 0, this leads to setting
ac->protocol = 0 and ac->ops = NULL. Thereafter, the check for
ac->protocol != protocol returns false, and init_protocol() is not
called. Subsequently, ac->ops->handle_reply() is called, which leads to
a null pointer dereference, because ac->ops is still NULL.
This patch changes the check for ac->protocol != protocol to
!ac->protocol, as this also includes the case when the protocol was set
to zero in the message. This causes the message to be treated as
containing a bad auth protocol.
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's libceph component. A remote attacker could send a specially crafted authentication reply message to trigger a null pointer dereference. This vulnerability can lead to a system crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) for affected systems.
Отчет
This Moderate flaw in the Linux kernel's libceph component could allow a remote attacker on an adjacent network with low privileges to trigger a null pointer dereference. By sending a specially crafted authentication reply message, an attacker can cause a system crash, leading to a Denial of Service. This impact is limited to systems where the libceph module is actively used and exposed to an untrusted adjacent network, as Ceph services are not typically exposed to the broader internet.
Меры по смягчению последствий
To reduce exposure, systems not utilizing Ceph storage can prevent the ceph kernel module from loading. Create a file /etc/modprobe.d/disable-ceph.conf with the line blacklist ceph. A system reboot is required for this change to take effect. For systems where Ceph is in use, restrict network access to Ceph services to trusted networks and clients through firewall configurations. This may impact functionality if Ceph services are required from untrusted networks.
