Описание
Applications that evaluate user-supplied Spring Expression Language (SpEL) expressions may be vulnerable to a Denial of Service (DoS) attack when the power operator (^) is used with a BigDecimal or BigInteger operand and a large exponent value.
Spring Framework 7.0.0 - 7.0.8
Spring Framework 6.2.0 - 6.2.19
Spring Framework 6.1.0 - 6.1.28
Spring Framework 6.0.0 - 6.0.30
Spring Framework 5.3.0 - 5.3.49
Spring Framework 5.2.25.RELEASE and earlier
A flaw was found in Spring Framework. Applications that process user-supplied Spring Expression Language (SpEL) expressions are vulnerable to a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. This occurs when the power operator (^) is used with large numerical operands, leading to excessive resource consumption. A remote attacker could exploit this to make the application unresponsive.
Отчет
A vulnerability was found in Spring Framework's Spring Expression Language (SpEL) engine. When evaluating untrusted SpEL expressions containing the power operator (^) with a BigDecimal or BigInteger operand and an excessively large exponent, the expression parser performs unbounded mathematical calculations. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can supply crafted SpEL queries to consume excessive CPU and memory resources, causing application thread exhaustion and resulting in a denial of service (DoS). Default container resource limits (cgroup memory and CPU quotas) constrain host-level impact, though application process unresponsiveness or crashes remain unavoidable.
Меры по смягчению последствий
Avoid evaluating untrusted, user-supplied Spring Expression Language (SpEL) input. Where SpEL evaluation of user input is mandatory, configure custom MethodResolvers or PropertyAccessors to sanitize expressions, or enforce strict execution timeouts and character white-listing upstream before expression parsing.
